Redesigning Medicare Enrollment for Providers in Transition
PECOS 2.0 streamlines Medicare enrollment with pre-filled applications, tailored workflows, real-time tracking, and simplified state and federal processes—enhancing efficiency and reducing provider burden
Description
PECOS 2, a modernized successor to the Provider Enrollment, Chain, and Ownership System (PECOS), was a multi-year project with a budget of over $100 million. It aimed to create a streamlined, intuitive system for Medicare enrollment and transitions, addressing the needs of both providers and contractors. Our work focused on redesigning workflows, reducing errors, and delivering a smoother, more efficient experience.
We designed a user-friendly section of PECOS 2 that simplied the process for providers undergoing career transitions such as relocating, retiring, billing privately, or working under another Medicare provider. The project addressed challenges in the PECOS 1 system, which lacked clear guidance and safeguards. Providers often selected incorrect options, leading to denied claims and manual follow-ups by Medicare contractors, causing delays and inefficiencies.
